State Literacy is not another behavior program. It is a framework for understanding how the body shapes access, learning, relationships, and behavior.

What is State Literacy?

State Literacy is a practical framework that helps people understand behavior through the body's search for safety, belonging, and predictability.

The Framework

1. The Old Guardian

The body's first responsibility is survival.

Long before we think, reason, or choose, the body is constantly asking:

  • Am I safe?

  • Do I belong?

  • What happens next?

The Old Guardian gathers evidence from the world and determines what becomes possible before conscious thought ever begins.

2. The New Kid

The thinking brain makes meaning from the access the body provides.

The New Kid is where language, learning, reasoning, planning, and reflection live.

It is brilliant—but it cannot consistently access its full abilities when the Old Guardian believes safety, belonging, or predictability are uncertain.

3. The Four States

Access changes before behavior changes.

The body moves through four predictable states as it responds to the world.

  • Settled – Available for learning, connection, and curiosity.

  • Activated – Alert and preparing to respond.

  • Overwhelmed – Losing access to flexible thinking.

  • Survival – Focused on protection rather than learning.

Behavior isn't random.

It reflects the state of the system.
