Behavior makes sense when the body makes sense.
This paper is grounded in the State Literacy framework—the understanding that changing body states influence what we can access. As a body's state changes, so do thinking, learning, flexibility, emotional regulation, and connection.
For generations, we've focused primarily on behavior. State Literacy invites us to look one step earlier—to the physiological conditions that shape behavior before it ever appears.
Why This Matters Now
Children today spend more time sitting and looking at screens than any generation before them—at school, at home, and in nearly every public space.
This cultural shift has been rapid, normalized, and largely unintended.
While much of the public conversation focuses on screen content, device limits, or behavior management, a more fundamental issue often goes unnamed:
Developing nervous systems are being asked to think without moving.
A Foundational Truth
Humans regulate through their bodies before they regulate through their minds.
Movement is not a break from learning.
Movement is one of the primary ways the nervous system organizes itself so learning can occur.
Before children can:
attend
reflect
regulate emotion
inhibit impulses
solve problems
learn efficiently
their bodies must receive enough movement, rhythm, load, and orientation to establish internal stability.
What Movement Actually Does
Whole-body movement provides essential nervous system input:
Proprioception
Vestibular input
Stress discharge
Arousal regulation
Sleep readiness
Emotional stabilization
These processes occur automatically.
They do not require insight, language, or motivation.
Movement organizes the body before cognition organizes the mind.
What Sitting and Screens Change
Screens provide stimulation without bodily organization.
While children sit and engage cognitively:
the eyes move,
attention accelerates,
dopamine is released,
but
muscles remain quiet,
breathing becomes shallow,
organizing sensory input decreases dramatically.
Over time, the nervous system begins operating with less physiological support.
Children may appear:
restless
shut down
emotionally reactive
chronically distracted
fatigued
unmotivated
These are not character flaws.
They are often the predictable consequences of a body waiting for movement that never comes.
Sensory Debt
When movement is repeatedly deferred, the body accumulates what can be thought of as sensory debt.
Eventually the nervous system begins searching for regulation wherever it can find it.
We see:
scrolling instead of pacing
snacking instead of moving
fidgeting instead of discharge
emotional reactivity instead of regulation
These behaviors are often treated as discipline problems rather than physiological signals.
A State Literacy Perspective
State Literacy shifts the question.
Instead of asking,
"Why is this child behaving this way?"
we begin asking,
"What state is this body in?"
That single shift changes everything.
When we understand the body's state, behavior begins to make sense.
What Schools Can Do
Schools did not create this cultural shift, but they are uniquely positioned to restore what developing nervous systems need.
Small environmental changes matter:
frequent movement throughout the day
permission to move while learning
intentional transitions
opportunities for rhythm and heavy work
environments designed to support regulation before expecting performance
When bodies receive the input they need, regulation improves.
And when regulation improves...
Learning follows.
Bottom Line
Children do not regulate through screens.
They regulate through movement.
The issue is not screen presence.
It is movement absence.
When we restore movement, we restore access.
Bodies before behavior.
Regulation before cognition.
Design before discipline.
