Millions of Years in a Second
What a wasp taught me about the elegance of the nervous system.
Yesterday, after weeks without it, our apartment pool finally reopened.
I had worked out that morning, then spent time floating in the warm Texas water. My muscles relaxed. I stretched. I played "Gumby" in the pool. My body felt wonderfully loose, and by the time I climbed the outdoor stairs to my third-floor apartment, I had headphones on, music playing, and my mind was completely absorbed in the simple joy of the day.
Then I glanced down.
A wasp.
What struck me wasn't the wasp.
It was what happened inside me.
One fraction of a second, I was peacefully walking upstairs, listening to music and enjoying the evening. The next, my heart rate surged, my muscles mobilized, and my entire body was prepared to run if necessary.
The speed was breathtaking.
There wasn't a committee meeting.
There wasn't a conscious decision.
The Old Guardian saw something that had mattered for millions of years and immediately made resources available for survival.
The completeness of the response amazed me.
Within an instant, my body had access to strength, speed, attention, and energy that simply hadn't existed a moment before.
Then, almost immediately, the New Kid came back online.
I looked again.
The wasp wasn't flying.
It appeared caught in a spider's web.
It wasn't moving toward me.
The New Kid reached its conclusion almost instantly.
"I'm okay."
Just as quickly, it wanted to return to the music, the quiet evening, and the thoughts that had been interrupted.
But something else happened.
Although my conscious mind had already settled, my body hadn't completely caught up.
For several minutes I could still feel the echo of what had happened.
At first, I wondered why.
If I knew I was safe, why wasn't my body immediately back to normal?
The answer isn't that the Old Guardian is stubborn.
It's that physiology and consciousness don't operate on identical clocks.
Once the body has mobilized resources, those changes don't disappear in a single thought. Heart rate slows gradually. Muscles release gradually. The chemistry of mobilization settles over time.
But evolution offers another beautiful insight.
Imagine an early human hearing movement in the brush.
If the body relaxed immediately after every possible threat, it might miss the one predator that had simply gone quiet.
So the nervous system learned something wiser.
Recover gradually.
Keep a few extra resources available just a little longer.
A few additional minutes of vigilance cost very little.
Relaxing too quickly could cost everything.
Suddenly my own experience made perfect sense.
My New Kid had already gathered enough evidence to know I was safe.
My Old Guardian was simply completing the elegant work it had evolved to do.
It wasn't overreacting.
It wasn't refusing to listen.
It was tapering.
As my body continued receiving evidence that nothing else was happening, it slowly returned to equilibrium.
That tiny moment on a staircase became one of the clearest demonstrations I've ever experienced of how the nervous system works.
Within seconds I watched prediction become physiology.
I watched my body instantly make resources available for survival.
I watched my conscious mind gather new evidence.
I watched understanding arrive before my physiology had completely settled.
And then I watched my body, in its own time, return to balance.
The story isn't really about a wasp.
It's about pausing long enough to witness something extraordinary.
Most of us experience moments like this and simply call them being startled. We never stop to notice what actually unfolded.
For one extraordinary moment, I watched my nervous system do exactly what it was designed to do.
I watched millions of years of evolution appear in a fraction of a second.
The more closely I observe my body, the more reverence I have for it.
Not because it is perfect.
Not because it never makes a false alarm.
But because, every moment of every day, it is faithfully doing what it evolved to do—protecting my life while continuously learning from new evidence.
There is something profoundly humbling about realizing that I don't simply have a miraculous nervous system.
I am that miraculous system.
And every now and then, if I pause long enough to pay attention, I get the extraordinary privilege of watching it work.
