Understanding Your Body Learner—So You Can Better Support Your Child
A Three-Hour State Literacy Workshop for Parents and Caregivers
Your child is struggling. You've tried explaining, reminding, encouraging, setting consequences, and sometimes simply giving in because you don't have the energy for another battle.
But have you ever stopped to notice what happens in your own body during those difficult moments?
Does your breathing change? Does your voice rise? Do you feel rushed, frustrated, embarrassed, helpless, or overwhelmed?
You may understand your child's behavior better than anyone. But you may never have considered how your own Body Learner is participating in the experience.
That's where the Parent Institute begins.
Two Body Learners. One Shared Experience.
Every challenging interaction involves more than the behavior we can see.
Your child brings their experiences, expectations, and developing abilities into the moment.
And so do you.
Your Body Learner is constantly responding to what it anticipates. Sometimes it pushes you toward greater control. Sometimes it urges you to avoid another confrontation.
Neither response necessarily gives your child the predictability they need.
State Literacy helps you recognize these patterns so you can respond with greater awareness, connection, and consistency.
Because your response today becomes part of what your child learns to expect tomorrow.
What You'll Experience
Hour One: Notice Your Body Learner
What happens in me when my child struggles?
Before examining your child's behavior, you'll explore your own responses.
Through guided reflection and interactive activities, you'll discover:
How your body responds to difficult parenting moments
What triggers feelings of urgency, frustration, or helplessness
How your past experiences may influence your expectations
How to recognize your early warning signs before reacting
You'll leave with: My Body Learner Reflection, a practical tool for recognizing your own patterns.
Hour Two: Two Body Learners, One Moment
How does my response shape my child's experience?
Now we'll look at what happens when two Body Learners interact.
You'll explore common situations where access and connection can break down, including transitions, separation, demands, boundaries, sensory challenges, and relationship repair.
You'll learn to recognize the difference between what you observe and what you assume—and how your response can influence what happens next.
You'll leave with: My Family's Prediction Map, a tool for understanding recurring interactions.
Hour Three: Build Predictability Together
How can I create a different experience?
Understanding is the beginning. Now we put that understanding into practice.
You'll learn how to:
Establish routines that reduce uncertainty
Recognize when your own body is becoming activated
Combine compassionate connection with clear boundaries
Support your child's individual developmental and disability-related needs
Repair difficult moments and practice new responses
You'll design one realistic change to practice at home over the next seven days.
You'll leave with: My Family's New Prediction Plan.
Who Is This Workshop For?
The Parent Institute is designed for parents and caregivers navigating recurring behavioral challenges, including families of children with ADHD, autism, developmental disabilities, or other support needs.
It is especially relevant for parents who feel caught between two difficult choices: becoming increasingly punitive or withdrawing expectations to avoid another confrontation.
You do not need previous knowledge of State Literacy.
You only need a willingness to become curious about what happens in your own body when parenting becomes difficult.
A Different Way to Understand Challenging Behavior
The goal is not to become a perfect parent.
It is not to eliminate every difficult behavior.
And it is not to excuse harmful behavior because a child has a disability.
The goal is to recognize how experiences shape expectations—and to create more opportunities for safety, belonging, predictability, and learning.
Connection and accountability can exist together.
Predictability is not punishment.
Understanding your Body Learner gives you more choices in the moments that matter.
