When the Stakes Change

State Literacy for Coaches, Teams & Championship Preparation

Your athletes know the drills. They've practiced the plays. They've developed the skills.

So why can everything change when the stakes get higher?

A missed shot suddenly feels enormous. A player who performed confidently in practice becomes hesitant. One mistake turns into three. A team that normally communicates effortlessly begins to lose its rhythm.

Coaches recognize these moments.

But what if there's another learner on the court that we've never been taught to coach?

Every athlete brings two learners into competition:

  • The Cognitive Learner understands instruction, strategy, technique, and the rules of the game.

  • The Body Learner responds to the experience of competition, including pressure, uncertainty, mistakes, safety, and belonging.

When the stakes change, the athlete's skills may remain intact while access to those skills becomes more difficult.

State Literacy gives coaches a practical framework for recognizing what is happening and designing team experiences that support recovery, connection, and readiness.

What Coaches Will Discover

  • Why athletes may perform differently under pressure even when their skills are well established.

  • How mistakes can change an athlete's immediate sense of safety and belonging.

  • Why team rituals, huddles, communication, and predictable routines matter beyond motivation.

  • How to design simple reset practices that help athletes orient, reconnect, and prepare for the next play.

  • How a coach's own responses can influence the experience of an individual athlete and the entire team.

Two Ways to Bring State Literacy to Your Program

Coaches' Clinics & Professional Learning

A 90-minute interactive session designed to give coaches a new lens for understanding athletes, team cohesion, performance pressure, and recovery after mistakes.

A 30-minute introductory keynote is also available.

Pre-Competition Team Visits

A focused 20-minute experience for athletes preparing for regional championships, state competitions, tournaments, or other high-pressure events.

Athletes learn to recognize their Body Learner's responses and practice a simple team reset they can carry into competition.

The Goal

Not to eliminate nerves. Not to promise perfect performance.

To help athletes and coaches understand what changes when the stakes rise—and what they can do to preserve access to the skills they've worked so hard to develop.

You've trained for the competition. Let's prepare for the experience.
